Airport Performance Management, Hinterland Impact, and Global Decision Analysis Model

(Conference Proceeding)

Conference: 12th Aviation Student Research Workshop
Year: 2015
Location: Amsterdam , Netherlands

Abstract

Airport benchmarking depends on airport performance and efficiency indicators and it is an important issue for business, operational management, regulatory agencies, airlines and passengers. The literature points several indicators to evaluate airports performance and efficiency as well as several techniques to benchmark such infrastructures. The Airport Council International (ACI) divides the airport in six Key Performance Areas (KPAs) each one associated to several Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Also it is possible to benchmark either a set of airports (peer benchmark process) or the same airport along several years (self benchmark process). Based on MACBETH (Measuring Attractiveness by a Categorical Based Evaluation Technique), a Multicriteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) tool, we developed a process to benchmark any airport or a group of airports, using several KPAs and the related KPIs and simultaneously involving the stakeholders. In this model we intend to include the Hinterland too, a seventh KPA. Based on the preliminary results we are convicted that this Global Decision Analysis Model is a powerful tool not only to evaluate the performance and efficiency of any airport in a global perspective [air side, land side, and related hinterland – or catchment area], but also to peer benchmark it within a set of direct competitors or to self-benchmark itself during a certain period of time.
