The research activities of NIT are multidisciplinary, linking basic and applied research to more complex air transportation issues, focused on Air Traffic Flow Management, Air Transportation Infrastructures (Planning, Operation, Management and Economics), Airline Operations (Management and Economics), Aviation Safety (including Weather Conditions) and Security, Human Factors in Aviation, Flight Instrumentation, and Environmental Impact of Aviation.
NIT undertakes interdisciplinary research activities involving other modes of transportation too, and exploring concepts as intermodality and interoperability. To achieve its objectives

Air Transportation and Airports
- To develop and implement new techniques based on information technology and human centred systems for a better risk assessment, monitoring and control of airport environment.
- To develop knowledge to improve airport traffic flow management.
- To improve knowledge to deal with capacity problems and to improve efficiency of domestic and international air transportation systems and infrastructures.
- To develop knowledge in specific airport management areas including the design and prototype of decision support systems for airport operations.
- To develop knowledge in new business models for airports as well as for airlines – including in this particular the operational and economic impacts of the use of both, special aircrafts and private jet services.
- To promote the exchange of knowledge of new technologies for the optimization of air transportation processes, including the management of technology and innovation, as a way to promote competitive advantages.
- To develop knowledge in airports and airlines marketing, pricing and competition strategies.
- To develop knowledge in simulation design and implementation to develop suitable support systems able to model airport processes and thus improving overall efficiency.
- To derive science and technology development of an environmental friendly air transportation system able to analyse and evaluate the impacts of economic actions of airlines and airport managers on regional and national economies.
- To improve knowledge in new concepts/design of airships for new commercial applications.
- To promote knowledge in flight modelling to simulate new aircraft systems and concepts.

Flight Safety and Security
- To improve knowledge on pilot’s psychophysiological behaviour and its impact on flight performance and safety.
- To promote knowledge on emergency protocols and air transport constrains for passengers with reduced mobility in airport terminals/facilities, airport-aircraft transfers and aircrafts.
